The 2026 Census is coming. The 2021 one is still the freshest picture we have.
Every Australian household completes the Census on Tuesday 11 August 2026. But the first results aren’t published until mid-2027, with the full set rolling out into 2028. Until then, the 2021 Census remains the most complete, official picture of who we are — and you can ask it anything, in plain English.
That gap is the point: for the next year, decisions, articles and research still lean on the 2021 Census. ABS AI makes that data answerable without SQL, spreadsheets, or hunting through datapacks.
This becomes the place to explore it.
ABS AI is built to add new Census years as the ABS publishes them — the same plain-English interface, now spanning 2011, 2016, 2021 and, from 2027, 2026. Ask a question today and it’ll still work the day the new data arrives; you’ll just be able to ask “and how did that change?”.
